Newman Halls of Residence & Refurbishment of the Sturge Building

Newman Halls of Residence & Refurbishment of the Sturge Building

Birmingham-based Newman University required new halls of residence to be constructed alongside an extension and refurbishment of the Sturge Building. The new halls comprise of 108 ensuite bedrooms with shared communal kitchens and living room spaces. The extension of the Sturge Building includes a large breakout space, classrooms and a lecture theatre.

The project was delivered five weeks early within budget and without snags. Initially, there were concerns that the budget might be exceeded which put the whole project in jeopardy. However, Stewarts and the Morgan Sindall design team were able to collaborate on an extensive value engineering exercise which led to savings of £1.37m, allowing the scheme to continue.

There was a strong focus on protecting the student experience and the resulting student accommodation is state-of-the-art with the new teaching areas exceeding all expectations.

The project went on to win Building Project of the Year at the 2018 Celebrating Construction awards, a great achievement for Newman University and the construction design team.
